More and more organizations are running projects with globally distributed teams, despite the common wisdom that Scrum works best with co-located personnel. Given that decision, what are the keys to success? What are the pitfalls to avoid?
This talk is based on real life experience. The first project was a successful one year Scrum-based effort with four US locations and one India-based team. The second case – a multi-year co-development project with teams in the US and India – failed. The lessons learned align very well with the Agile Manifesto.
About the speaker:
David Grabel is Agile Coach & Director of Applications Development at Monetrics in Beverly, MA. He brought Scrum to Monetrics in 2003 where he has served as Scrum Master, Product Owner and Coach. He is currently an internal agile coach for Monetrics and DataScan, a sister company in Atlanta, GA. David has also been involved in off-shore co-development and geographically distributed teams using Scrum.
David started as a software developer in the dark ages of Structured Programming and has managed development in start-ups and large companies for over 30 years. Prior positions included VP of Application Development and Internet Technology at Thomson/Gale, VP of Engineering at Politzer & Haney, and VP of Product Development at F3 Software. He has a BA in Applied Math from Columbia and an MS from Harvard in Applied Math/Computer Science.
