Linear Scalability – The Holy Grail of Agile Project Management

Jeff Sutherland

Business agility is only achieved when an entire value stream is saturated with Scrum, so Scrum needs to work in all departments and domains.

Jeff will describe the history of how Scrum was used across many companies leading up to a linearly scalable global project in 2007. He will describe his recent experience with Saab, Toyota, 3M, GE, transportation and oil companies, and other domains and share how those experiences can be codified into a systematic way of deploying Scrum across domains, across organizations, and across the globe. He will highlight the essentials for developing a “scale-free” organization architecture, based on input from the Agile leaders of the largest known Scrum implementations at Intel and SAP.

You will learn:
   * Why a simple fractal model is essential to high performing scaled Scrum (how to deploy a scale-free architecture)
   * Why colocation is critical to performance (how to implement distributed teams that feel collocated)
   * Why saturation of Scrum across an organization is essential to business agility (how to deploy Scrum across
      departments and domains)
   * Where to go next to amplify these learning objectives

About the Speaker:

Jeff Sutherland is the inventor and Co-Creator of Scrum. In 1983 he joined a banking company as VP of Advanced Systems and General Manager of their ATM Business Unit. Noticing that waterfall processes at the bank were not working, he implemented the first prototype of Scrum for organizational transformation of a business unit.

He has been VP of Engineering and CTO or CEO of eleven software companies. In the first four companies he prototyped Scrum, and in the fifth company, created Scrum as we now see it used in 74% of Agile software companies in over 100 countries.

In 2006, Sutherland established Scrum, Inc., now recognized as the premiere source of Scrum Training in the world. He is also Senior Advisor and Agile Coach to Openview Venture Partners. His latest book, Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time, describes how he used his background and experience to create the most widely used Agile practice in industry today.
